Spain's long weekends in 2027: which days to take off for a longer break
15 min
Before choosing where to go in 2027, it's worth looking at the calendar. With the year's public holidays already published in Spain's official gazette (BOE), several dates let you stretch a trip using only a few days of leave.
Here are the most useful long weekends and the calendar for each region. The counts are of consecutive calendar days, and they say which working days you'd need to take off. They don't include each town's local holidays, which can change the result.
The most useful long weekends of 2027
December: five days for one day of leave. Constitution Day falls on Monday 6 and the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday 8. Take Tuesday 7 off and you get five days in a row, from Saturday 4 to Wednesday 8. Take Thursday 9 and Friday 10 off as well and you can link nine days, from 4 to 12 December, using three days of leave.
New Year and Epiphany. 1 January falls on a Friday and Epiphany on Wednesday 6. Take Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 off and you get six days off in a row, from 1 to 6 January. Add Thursday 7 and Friday 8 as well and it's ten days, from 1 to 10 January, using four days of leave.
Easter: it depends on where you work. Maundy Thursday, 25 March, is a holiday in every region except Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Where it is one, you get four days in a row, from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28, without taking any leave. In the Balearic Islands, Navarre, La Rioja and the Basque Country, Easter Monday, 29 March, is a holiday too, so the break stretches to five days, from the 25th to the 29th. In Catalonia and the Valencian Community the holiday is Easter Monday, not Maundy Thursday: there the break runs from Friday 26 to Monday 29, also four days.
Take the working days from Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 March off and the break becomes nine days in a row, from Saturday 20 to Sunday 28, where Maundy Thursday is a holiday, or ten, up to Monday 29, in the regions that also have Easter Monday off. The result depends on your region's calendar.
12 October falls on a Tuesday. Take Monday 11 off and you get four days in a row, from Saturday 9 to Tuesday 12. In Extremadura, Monday 11 is already a holiday, so there's no need to take it off.
All Saints' Day. 1 November falls on a Monday: three days in a row, from Saturday 30 October to Monday 1 November, without using any leave.
Holidays that fall on a weekend
- 1 May and 25 December fall on a Saturday. Landing on the weekend, they don't create an extra long weekend on their own.
- The Assumption, 15 August, falls on a Sunday. The day off moves to the following Monday in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Castile and León and Madrid: Monday 16 August. Extremadura puts it on Monday 11 October; the other regions choose other holidays for their calendar.
- Two regional holidays also fall on a Saturday: Catalonia's National Day, 11 September, and Valencian Community Day, 9 October.

These nine dates are holidays in every region and in Ceuta and Melilla. Maundy Thursday isn't included here because it isn't a holiday in Catalonia or the Valencian Community; check the regional tables to see how Easter works out in each place.

Don't forget your town's holidays
On top of the national and regional calendar, each municipality can have up to two local holidays. The rules set a general maximum of fourteen public holidays a year, those two local ones included. To find them, check your region's or province's official gazette. It's worth doing before you book leave: a local holiday next to a weekend can give you a longer break.
How much annual leave are you entitled to?
If you're an employee in Spain, the Workers' Statute gives you a minimum of 30 calendar days of paid leave a year. Your collective agreement or contract can improve on that. As a general rule, leave can't be swapped for money, and the dates must be agreed between the employer and the employee. You must know them at least two months before the leave starts.
You have the dates: what trip fits in them?
A four- or five-day break can be enough to see a city at a relaxed pace or to explore somewhere nearby. If the destination is far away or you want to change accommodation several times, you'll need to set aside part of the time for getting around.
Our guide How many days do I need for a trip? gives you a practical way to work out the length. And if you already know when you can travel, plan your trip with TripPlan to fit the route to your dates.
Frequently asked questions
How many public holidays are there in Spain in 2027? The calendar combines nationwide and regional holidays to make, as a general rule, twelve in each region. The Canary Islands have eleven nationwide and regional holidays, plus each island's own. On top of those, each municipality can add up to two local holidays, within the general legal maximum of fourteen.

What's the best long weekend of 2027? If you have weekends off, December's stands out: by taking Tuesday 7 off, you can have five days off in a row, from the 4th to the 8th.
Where are local holidays published? In the official gazette of the relevant region or province. Check your town hall's information too.
The long weekends assume a standard Monday-to-Friday working week. If you work shifts, at weekends or to a specific work calendar, check your days off with your employer or collective agreement.
