What you're going to see

Salento

  • Valle del Cocora

The wax palms, the national tree, reach 60 metres: they are the tallest palms in the world. You go by Willys jeep from the square.

  • Fincas cafeteras tradicionales

The tour runs from picking to roasting, and you taste what has just been ground. Several farms also take guests.

  • Calle Real

Bahareque houses painted in strong colours, the architecture of the Coffee Cultural Landscape, a World Heritage site.

  • Mirador de Salento

At the end of the Calle Real, 250 steps up to the view over the valley and the cordillera.

  • Tejo

The national sport: you throw a metal disc at gunpowder, which explodes. It is played on the town's courts and the beer is the stake.

Manizales

  • Hacienda Venecia

One of the benchmark estates of Colombian speciality coffee, with a half-day cupping course.

  • Nevado del Ruiz

Páramo and snow at 5,300 metres, two hours away. Volcanic activity can close access: confirm on the day.

  • Recinto del Pensamiento

Cloud forest with a cable car, a butterfly house and the orchid garden. It explains the ecosystem this coffee grows in.

  • Catedral de Manizales

The tallest tower in Colombia, 106 metres, and you climb inside it to the viewpoint between the spires.

Filandia

  • Mirador Colina Iluminada

A 27-metre wooden tower with views over Quindío and, on a clear day, the Cauca Valley.

  • El pueblo de los balcones

Less visited than Salento and with the same colourful architecture. Much of the telenovela Café, con aroma de mujer was filmed here.

  • Talleres de cestería

Baskets have been woven from bejuco vine here for generations, and coffee was picked into them before sacks.

  • Tostadores de especialidad

Several cafés in town roast their own beans and explain the process as they serve it. It is where you notice the difference from export coffee.
