What you're going to see
El Cairo
Pirámides de Guiza y la Esfinge
They stand inside the city, not out in the desert. Going inside the Great Pyramid is a separate, limited ticket.
Gran Museo Egipcio
It brings together Tutankhamun's complete burial goods, previously split up. It is vast: half a day is the sensible minimum.
Saqqara y la pirámide escalonada
Djoser's step pyramid is the oldest known structure in cut stone, older than those at Giza. 30 km from the centre.
Menfis
The capital of the Old Kingdom, today an open-air museum with the recumbent colossus of Ramesses II. Combine it with Saqqara on the same outing.
Khan el-Khalili
The fourteenth-century bazaar. You always haggle, and the El Fishawy café has been open for more than two centuries.
Lúxor
Valle de los Reyes
General admission gets you into three tombs of your choosing; Tutankhamun's and Seti I's are paid separately.
Templo de Karnak
The hypostyle hall's 134 columns are the largest thing the New Kingdom left behind. Half a morning to see it without rushing.
Templo de Hatshepsut
The terraced temple against the Deir el-Bahari cliff, built by the woman who reigned as pharaoh. There is no shade: go early.
Globo sobre el Valle al amanecer
You see the Nile separating the city of the living from the city of the dead, which is the logic the whole of Luxor is ordered by.
Templo de Luxor de noche
Lit up and right in the centre. It stays open late, and it walks far better once the heat drops.
Asuán
Templo de File
It was dismantled and moved stone by stone to another island to save it from the High Dam's reservoir. You arrive by boat.
Obelisco inacabado
It still lies in the quarry where it cracked, and explains how they were carved better than any museum.
Paseo en faluca al atardecer
The Nile's traditional sailing boat, between Elephantine Island and the Aga Khan mausoleum. Agree the price before you get on.
Pueblo nubio de la isla Elefantina
Brightly painted houses and a culture distinct from the rest of Egypt, with a language of its own.
La presa alta
The work that created Lake Nasser and forced the moving of Philae and Abu Simbel. Without it you cannot understand why those temples are not where they were.
