What you're going to see

Guadalajara

  • Plaza de los Mariachis

Mariachi was born in Jalisco. Here you hire them by the song and listen in the street, not at a ticketed show.

  • Hospicio Cabañas

A World Heritage site for Orozco's murals. “The Man of Fire” is in the dome: there are benches for viewing it lying down.

  • Tlaquepaque

The artisans' district, with pottery and glassblowing workshops. El Parián is the oldest mariachi courtyard in the area.

  • Mercado San Juan de Dios

The largest covered market in Latin America, on three floors. The top one is the food floor.

  • José Cuervo Express

The themed train from Guadalajara to Tequila with a tasting on board. It only runs some days: check the calendar.

Tequila

  • Campos de agave azul

The agave landscape is a World Heritage site. The plant takes between seven and ten years to be ready to cut.

  • Destilería La Rojeña

Working since 1795, the oldest in Latin America. The visit takes you into the stone ovens and the barrel store.

  • Casa Sauza y los jardines Quinta Sauza

The town's other great house. Its tour explains the difference between 100% agave tequila and mixto, which is the thing actually worth knowing.

  • Ver jimar a un jimador

Cutting agave with the coa is a trade passed down in families. Several haciendas demonstrate it live, and it is the part of the visit nobody forgets.

  • Volcán de Tequila

The volcano that gave this land the volcanic soil the local agave grows in. You go up by 4x4.
