What you're going to see
Yogyakarta
Borobudur al amanecer
The largest Buddhist temple in the world, from the ninth century, with 2,672 relief panels. You go up with a guide and special footwear so the stone is not worn down.
Prambanan
The Hindu complex that answers the Buddhist one next door, with Shiva's 47-metre tower. At dusk there are Ramayana performances.
Monte Merapi en jeep
Indonesia's most active volcano. The route passes houses buried by the 2010 eruption, still kept as they were left.
Kraton
The sultan's palace, still lived in and with a court of its own. There is live gamelan in the mornings.
Malang
Monte Bromo al amanecer
You set out at two in the morning to watch the sun come up over the smoking crater. It is the image that defines Java.
Mar de Arena
The ash caldera ringing Bromo, crossed on foot or on horseback to the foot of the crater steps.
Mirador de Penanjakan
The point the photographs of Bromo with Semeru smoking behind it are taken from. It fills up: arrive early.
Tumpak Sewu
An amphitheatre of 120-metre waterfalls. Getting down to the base is slippery and not for everyone.
Banyuwangi
Cráter Ijen y el fuego azul
Sulphurous gas burns in blue flames visible only at night. You climb before dawn and need a gas mask, which the agencies provide.
Los mineros de azufre
They come up out of the crater carrying 70 to 90 kilos of sulphur on their backs, several times a day. Seeing it changes the tone of the whole excursion.
El lago ácido del Ijen
The largest acidic lake in the world, turquoise because of its chemistry. You do not touch it and you do not go down to the shore.
Amanecer desde el borde del cráter
As it gets light the blue fire vanishes and the turquoise lake appears: the same climb gives you two different landscapes within an hour.
Ubud
Monte Batur al amanecer
Two hours climbing in the dark to have breakfast at the top, with eggs cooked in the volcano's steam.
Tirta Empul
The holy-water temple where Balinese purify themselves under twelve spouts. You take part wearing a sarong and following the ritual order.
Terrazas de Tegallalang
Terraced rice paddies watered by the subak, the Balinese communal water system that is a World Heritage listing in its own right.
Bosque sagrado de los monos
Three temples among fig trees and some seven hundred macaques. Carry no food and nothing loose: they will take it.
