What you're going to see

Ålesund

  • Arquitectura art nouveau

The whole city burned in 1904 and was rebuilt in three years in the style of the moment, with dragons and Viking motifs on the façades.

  • Mirador de Aksla

418 steps up to the view of the city among its islands. It is the photograph that sums up why you sleep here.

  • Atlanterhavsvegen

The Atlantic Road, eight bridges hopping from islet to islet over open sea. The Storseisundet one looks as though it stops in mid-air.

  • Isla de Runde

Half a million seabirds, with puffins from April to August. It is Norway's southernmost colony.

Geiranger

  • Fiordo de Geiranger

A World Heritage site. You travel it by ferry between walls over a thousand metres high: the crossing is the point, not the destination.

  • Trollstigen

The trolls' ladder: eleven hairpins at a 10% gradient. Open May to October, depending on the snow.

  • Las Siete Hermanas

Seven falls dropping together into the fjord. Opposite them falls “the Suitor”, and legend has it he courted all seven without success.

  • Dalsnibba

1,500 metres with a road right to the top and the whole fjord below. It usually has snow even in July.

  • Ørnesvingen

The eagle's bend, eleven turns climbing from the village, with the lay-by that frames the fjord and the Seven Sisters.

Bergen

  • Bryggen

The Hanseatic wharf of coloured wooden houses, a World Heritage site. It has burned so often that what you see dates from 1702.

  • Funicular Fløibanen

Eight minutes up to 320 metres, with the city and its seven mountains below. The forest trails start at the top.

  • Troldhaugen

Edvard Grieg's house, with his composing hut by the lake. In summer there are daily piano recitals.

  • Iglesia de madera de Fantoft

A twelfth-century stave church, rebuilt after an arson attack in 1992. The carvings mix Christian crosses with Viking dragons.
