What you're going to see

Nairobi

  • Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

A rescue centre for orphaned elephants. It opens for visits one hour a day and must be booked: it is a working rehabilitation centre, not a show.

  • Giraffe Centre

A breeding programme for the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. You feed them from a platform level with their heads.

  • Museo Karen Blixen

The home of the author of Out of Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills. It explains where the romantic idea of the safari comes from.

  • Preparar el safari aquí

This is where you hire the 4x4 with a driver-guide and change money. Outside the city there are almost no cash machines and no reliable coverage.

Maasai Mara

  • La Gran Migración

The Mara river crossing concentrates the spectacle between July and October. Outside those months the reserve is still extraordinary, but the migration is not there.

  • Globo aerostático al amanecer

You take off in the dark and watch dawn break over the savannah with the animals below. It is expensive and booked ahead, but it is what people remember most.

  • Los cinco grandes

Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The leopard is the hard one: it takes several drives and a guide who knows where to look.

  • Visita a un poblado masái

The Maasai own this land and run the conservancies. Go with a lodge that shares its income with the community.

  • Salida de madrugada

The cats hunt at night and at first light. Whether you see them or not depends more on your departure time than on the place.

Lago Nakuru

  • Los flamencos del lago

Numbers swing enormously with the water level: some years there are hundreds of thousands, others barely any.

  • Rinocerontes blancos y negros

Being a fenced sanctuary makes it one of the most reliable places in Kenya to see rhino.

  • Baboon Cliff

The viewpoint over the whole lake, with the flamingos' pink visible from above when the season obliges.

  • El Valle del Rift

The geological fault that runs down the continent, crossed on the drive. There are signposted viewpoints on the road out of Nairobi.
