What you're going to see
El Calafate
Perito Moreno
One of the few ice fronts in the world that is not retreating. Every so often it dams the lake and eventually breaks with a roar.
Pasarelas del frente sur
Four kilometres of walkways at different heights, a few hundred metres from the ice. You hear it crack before you see anything fall.
Minitrekking sobre el hielo
You walk on the ice front in crampons, with a guide. There is an age limit and it books up ahead in season.
Navegación entre témpanos
The boats go in close to the Upsala and Spegazzini ice fronts, which cannot be reached by land.
Glaciarium
It explains how the Patagonian Ice Field forms and moves. Going before the excursion makes sense of what you see.
El Chaltén
Laguna de los Tres
The classic view of Fitz Roy reflected in the water. Eight hours there and back, with a very steep final kilometre.
Laguna Torre
Less demanding than the previous one, and facing Cerro Torre, the spire considered unclimbable for decades.
Mirador de los Cóndores
An hour from the village, with the view down the whole valley. It is the arrival-day walk, for getting acclimatised.
El viento como norma
El Chaltén is the national trekking capital and also one of the windiest places on the planet: routes close for wind, not for rain.
Puerto Natales
Torres del Paine
The three granite towers, 8 to 10 hours there and back. Park entry is booked online before you arrive.
Cueva del Milodón
Where the skin of an extinct giant sloth was found — the one that gave Bruce Chatwin In Patagonia.
Navegación a Balmaceda y Serrano
A full day along the Última Esperanza fjord, between sea lion colonies and hanging ice fronts.
Mirador Cuernos
The postcard of the Cuernos del Paine above Lake Pehoé, and you can drive there: it is the alternative to the towers' 10 hours.
