What you're going to see
Múnich
Hofbräuhaus
The court brewery since 1589. It is touristy and you should still go once: the litre maß and the brass band are the template the world copied.
Augustiner-Keller
Munich's oldest brewery, from 1328, with a chestnut garden seating 5,000. This is where people from Munich actually drink.
Theresienwiese
The Oktoberfest ground. Outside the two weeks of the festival — which starts in September, not October — it is empty and you can visit the Bavaria statue.
Viktualienmarkt
The central market has its own beer garden, and by agreement the brewery serving it rotates.
Abadía de Andechs
A Benedictine monastery that has been brewing since 1455, on top of a hill 40 km out. You walk up from Herrsching.
Bamberg
Schlenkerla
Rauchbier, smoked beer, with malt dried over beechwood. It tastes of smoked ham and is like nothing else: it is the reason to come to Bamberg.
Ayuntamiento sobre el río
Built on an artificial island in the middle of the Regnitz because the bishop would not give up any land. Half the building is timber-framed and half is stone.
Las nueve cervecerías del casco antiguo
Bamberg has one of the world's highest concentrations of house breweries, all walkable within a kilometre.
La Pequeña Venecia
The fishermen's houses on the riverbank, with their small gardens. It looks best from the bridge or from a boat.
Núremberg
Hausbrauerei Altstadthof
It brews in the old town and keeps the medieval cellars cut into the rock, which can be visited.
Bratwurst con cerveza roja
Nuremberg sausages are small by law, and you order them six at a time with the local Rotbier.
Castillo Imperial
Residence of every Holy Roman Emperor between 1050 and 1571. From the tower you see the whole city.
Sótanos históricos de la roca
Four storeys of galleries under the city, dug out to store beer and used as shelters during the war.
